Obituary for Andrew Ross Lowell
By: Adam F. Lowell Sr.
Losing a father is always difficult, irrespective of the circumstances. My father was a man who faced formidable difficulties due to his disabilities, but he was also a man with a kind heart and gentle disposition.
Although I don’t have an overwhelming number of cherished memories with him, a few do come to mind. I remember vividly when I was young, he would allow me to watch movies that my mother deemed “not child-appropriate” while she was away at work. The Bruce Lee flicks, and many more. It may seem like a small thing, but it reflects the kind of person my father was - someone who cared about my happiness in his own certain ways. I remember when he was a courtesy clerk at Giant foods. He would let me assist elderly people with groceries for tips. I wasn’t technically supposed to be doing this. But he always turned a blind eye and let me. In retrospect, engaging in this sparked an entrepreneurial spirit in me, and a love for the fruits of labor that I still carry to this day, while also trying to instill in my own children.
While my father may have relinquished his aspirations for a better life, he still had a great heart and wouldn't harm a fly. His gentle nature and kind spirit are a testament to the fact that strength comes in many forms, and that a person's worth is not solely measured by their productivity or accomplishments.
While the outcomes in his lifetime were not honestly the most positive, I believe that every life holds a lesson to be learned. My father's life was a reminder that we should never surrender in the face of adversity. Disabilities and setbacks should not become the burden we bare, but the challenge that we surmount. Some of us are born into these challenges. Some are significant, while others are minor. Some that may last a moment, a day, or even a lifetime. These challenges I believe aren’t meant to stop us from our destinies. But to prepare us and guide us towards them. If we relinquish our determination in the face of these challenges, we risk losing ourselves.
As we say goodbye to my father, let us remember him for the good friend and kindhearted person he was. Let us honor his memory by carrying on his legacy of kindness.
Rest in peace. You may have faced much adversity, but now you’re free. Your gentle spirit and kind heart will always be remembered and cherished by the ones fortunate enough to have called you a friend, family member, or acquaintance.
