Obituary for Arline Brown (Brooks)

Arline Brown (nee Brooks), of Riverdale, New York, passed away on Saturday, May 13th, 2023 at the age of 89. She is survived by her cherished children, Alan Brown (Linda Foxworthy), Jeffrey (Sasha) Brown, and Susan Brown Mandel (Andrew Mandel); grandchildren, Sam (Kate) Brown, Aaron (Marian) Brown, Isabel Brown, Daniel Brown, Henry Mandel, and Lucy Mandel; and great-grandchildren, Annabelle Brown and Margot Brown. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul I. Brown; siblings, Merle Hartstein and Howard Brooks; and parents, Shafa and David Brooks.

Arline was born on November 24, 1933 in Philadelphia. Arline lived most of her childhood in Baltimore, Maryland, and was school president of Forest Park High School, graduating with honors. She married Paul Brown in 1953, worked in the family furniture manufacturing business, and gave birth to her three children. In 1965, Arline, Paul, and family moved to Beachwood, Ohio. Arline took particular interest in education, becoming school board member for the city of Beachwood. She also earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Sociology from Case Western Reserve University. She partook in many volunteer and charitable activities. In 1977, she earned distinction as Beachwood citizen of the year for all her work in schools and volunteerism.

In 1978, Arline and Paul began another adventure as they moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil. While Paul continued his career, Arline became involved in Latin American art, where she helped export the works of several artists. She continued her involvement in education as leader of a parent committee at the American School.

Several years later, Arline and Paul moved to New York City. Arline worked as Assistant to the CEO for the Wall Street Transcript. Later, she became Director of Development for Spence-Chapin, the largest non-profit family adoption agency in New York. She also had executive-level positions at Asphalt Green and the Volunteer Referral Center - a career in non-profit management in New York City that lasted nearly 40 years.

Arline was always admired for her passion, integrity, work ethic, and intelligence. She truly cared about her family and friends. “Buish” (her nickname from early childhood), was adored by all and was blessed with so many enduring friendships. Buish worked tirelessly for so many causes, always doing the hard work to get the job done. Hers was a life well lived.
