Obituary for Carolyn Buckman (Mandel)

On January 6, 2021, Carolyn Buckman passed away after a long and brave battle with cancer. Carolyn Mandel was born in Baltimore, MD on January 14, 1932 to Jean and Lewis Mandel. Her sister was the late Sonia Mandel Tralins. Carolyn is survived by her husband Martin Buckman, her 4 children—Ellen, Marc, Sharon, and David; the children of her blended family—Andrea, Chris, James, and Laurel; her children’s spouses; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Short in stature and big in heart, Carolyn lived a long, rich and colorful life. She had many jobs, many hobbies, many interests and many, many friends. Late in life, she became an accomplished jewelry maker and made jewelry for and with cancer patients at Johns Hopkins, where she volunteered and would later become a patient. She also became a painter, creating vibrant and colorful paintings of the many places she visited during her lifetime. She also volunteered at the Jewish Museum in Baltimore. Carolyn was humble, funny, spicy, energetic, accepting and open, and she made everyone she encountered feel like family.

Services will be attended by family only. Please omit flowers. Contributions may be sent to the The Soul Center, c/o Beth El Congregation, 8101 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21208.
