Obituary for Charles Krifcher M.D.

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Charles Krifcher who peacefully passed away on October 25, 2022 from complications due to Alzheimer's Disease. Charles was born in 1934 and was the son of Cuban immigrants, Moises and Dora Krifcher, who came from Russia and Poland to Cuba at the end of the first World War in 1924. He grew up in Havana with his beloved older brother Manolo where they lived until Batista was overthrown by the Fidel Castro revolution. At that time the universities, and the medical school in which Charles and Manolo were enrolled, were abruptly and indefinitely closed. Charles was one of very few Cuban medical students accepted into U.S. medical schools. He completed medical school at the University of Tulane, and his internship and residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), after which he became board certified in anatomical and clinical pathology. During this time, he met and proposed to the love of his life, Sara, within 24 hours, after which they lived and loved together for 61 years. Charles’ fructiferous career included practicing at Homestead Hospital, West Jefferson Hills Hospital, and Braddock Hospital. He was Chief of Pathology and also became certified and worked as a Medical Review Officer and taught many pathology residents during his career. Charles' last position in pathology was at the McKeesport Hospital of UPMC, after which he retired from active practice. Charles was an avid WWII buff, a baseball fan, and made each person he spoke with feel that they were the most interesting person he had ever met. His greatest pleasure was to engage in conversation with both those he loved and those he had yet to make into a friend.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Moises and Dora Krifcher and his brother Manolo. He will be greatly missed by his most beloved wife, Sara Rubinstein Krifcher, and his daughter Helene (Andrew) Felber, son Ron Krifcher (Amy Barron), granddaughter Dani Felber, grandson Michael Felber, sister-in-law Dorita Krifcher, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Sunday, October 30th at 11am at the Judean Memorial Gardens Cemetery Chapel (Olney, Maryland). The family will be in mourning at the home of Helene and Andrew Felber, 14016 Forest Ridge Drive, North Potomac, Maryland and will receive family and friends for Shiva services on Sunday (October 30th) and Monday (October 31st) evenings at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles Krifcher's memory to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
