Obituary for Erika Sharayera (Langer)

Erika Sharayera, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, February 25th, 2023 at the age of 83. She is survived by her loving children, Susan Sarajari and Alexander Sharayera; her daughter-in-law Rebecca Sharayera; her dear siblings, Günther Langer and Ilse Raab; and her cherished grandchildren, Jonathan Sharayera, Robert Sharayera, and Leni Sharayera as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Abder-Razzag Sharayera; and her parents, Elfriede and Emil Langer.

Erika grew up as one of six siblings in Germany and was educated at the local monastery school. Her compassionate nature led her to study nursing at the prestigious Heidelberg University where she met her future husband, Abder-Razzag, who was a medical student there. They soon got married and embarked on an extremely happy and adventure-filled life together, which would last for 49 years, until the death of her beloved husband. After the birth of their children, Susan and Alexander, Erika’s happiness was complete. She was incredibly in love with her family and filled her home with love and kindness. Erika was a constant champion of her family and gave to everyone unselfishly. She supported her children in every way possible and encouraged them to explore the world around them and chase their own dreams.

Erika had a great passion for reading and her books provided her with a first glimpse of what the world had to offer. She and her husband travelled extensively around the globe and Erika had the privilege to live in many different countries where she always wholeheartedly embraced different cultures and religions. The love for reading led her to become a writer in her own right and she enjoyed writing poems and short stories. In addition to her passion for reading and writing, Erika was also a dedicated baker and is often remembered for the excellent cakes she created and introduced to her friends in the countries she lived in. A naturally curious person, she always saw the good in everyone and her kindness and compassion allowed her to build lasting friendships across the globe.

A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and Oma who will be missed desperately by all those she left behind.
