ALBANY- Esther Sherer, 87, passed away peacefully at her home on January 6, 2023.
Esther was born on December 30, 1935, in Baltimore, MD to the late Abe and Sara Dunn Malin and resided in Albany for almost 60 years.
Esther served as PTA President of School 19, Hackett Middle School and Albany High School. She was a member of Abigail Lodge #3 and the Albany Jewish Community Center. She was also a lifelong member of The Mended Hearts, Inc. Albany, NY Chapter 013, which was established by her late husband Robert J. Sherer. Before moving to Albany Esther worked at Johns Hopkins’ Well Baby Clinic in Baltimore. In Albany, Esther worked at Hope House, KeyBank and for many years, Albany Medical Center.
Esther was a supporter of SPAC, the Proctor's Theater, Capital Rep, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Lake George Opera Festival, the MacHayden Theater, The Glimmerglass Opera, The Steamer No.10 Theater and many other local community art and cultural events.
Esther was married to the Robert J. Sherer of Albany, NY until his passing in 1975. She is survived by her two children Me’ir (Matthew) Sherer and Kfir Mizrahi of Boston and Nicole (Sherer) Mintz and Joshua Mintz of Washington DC, and three grandsons, Jacob Mintz, Benjamin Mintz and Samuel Mintz. She is also survived by her brother Howard Malin and his wife Claretta, her brother Joseph Malin and his wife Lauri, and her sister-in-law Gabriela Sherer, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Services will be held at Levine’s Memorial Chapel on Monday, January 9, 2023 at 1:00. Interment will follow in the Hebrew Tailor's Cemetery, Guilderland, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held at Sol Levinson's Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road, on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at 1:00 pm.
The period of mourning will be observed at her home at 39 Ryckman Avenue, Albany, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings with a minyan service at the house each of those evenings.
Esther lived her life with dignity, gentleness, good humor and amazing strength of spirit in the face of failing physical health. She was much beloved, deeply respected and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
