Obituary for Helen Coplan (Friedman)

Helen Coplan (nee Friedman) of Pikesville, MD, passed away on Sunday, May 14th, 2023 at the age of 97. She is survived by her loving children, Jan (Lawrence) Rivitz and Lee Coplan (Linda Huganir); adored grandchildren, Matthew Rivitz and Molly (Gabriel) Doran; dear step-grandchildren, Nicole Huganir (Henry Melcher) and Adam Huganir (Katie Griffin); and cherished great-grandchildren, Zachary Rivitz, Eva Rivitz, Theodore Doran, and James Doran. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alfred Coplan; and dear sister, Adele Dietz.

Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Baltimore, Helen was a dedicated volunteer for Planned Parenthood, an avid devotee of the arts and a board member of the Kennedy Institute, where she volunteered to do testing for lead poisoning for Baltimore youths. But her greatest job was to be an unwavering, passionate, enthusiastic and doting lover of her friends and family. It particularly showed in her romance with her husband, Alfred, with whom she built a life, a family and a model for marriage. A fierce champion of each child, grandchild and great-grandchild, their accomplishments were always her own, be that from “Jan Darling”, “Lee Sweetheart”, “Molly My Love”, “Matthew Dear” or any of her other beloved family members. While her style and beauty never went unnoticed, her intellect and curiosity always shined through in everything from her bible study group to art seminars or her many book clubs. She will be missed by one and all.
