Obituary for Irving Isadore Kaplan

Irving Isadore Kaplan, of Pikesville, MD, passed away on Monday, April 18th, 2022 at the age of 93. He is survived by his children, Steven Jon (Karen Bookman) Kaplan, Beth Carol Kaplan (Nicholas O'Neill), and Daniel Lee Kaplan (Irina Bruck); brother Harold S. Kaplan (Iris Toby Spector Kaplan); and grandchildren: Mila Kaplan, Sofia Kaplan, Oona Kaplan O'Neill, and Esme Kaplan O'Neill. He was predeceased by his wife, Jo Sande Kaplan (nee Frankel); and parents, Bertha and Lazare Kaplan.

Irving met his beloved wife, Jo Sande, at a Baltimore synagogue club in 1955. Their first date was on a club outing to Atlantic City, New Jersey. They fell in love while walking on the boardwalk and had dinner together at the famous Jewish restaurant in Atlantic City called Teplitzky's Old English. They were married four years later on February 22, 1959. Irving worked at Westinghouse for 38 years from February 1955 through February 1993. He became the section manager of the radar division and was in charge of 120 electrical engineers. Each May, Irv organized a picnic and outdoor games with the engineers at Patapsco State Park. Irv earned five US government patents for radar design which can still be found on the internet. He found it especially rewarding to assist others in reaching their full potential in their careers and personal lives.

Irving went around the neighborhood and among his friends, taking photographs and creating albums for them to keep. He loved singing Yiddish songs daily for family and friends. After graduating college, he became a member of the premier square-dance club in Denver, Colorado called Circle-Four. Irving would most want to be remembered for telling hilarious jokes and stories at serious engineering meetings to lighten the atmosphere and create laughter when it was least expected. He wrote a song in Spanish called "Me Gusta La Conga" which he loved to sing as a surprise at parties and which can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nAdhea6kznw
