Jacqueline Ristin Lipsky (born Zvoristin), formerly of Miami Beach and Coral Gables, Florida, and Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away in Catonsville, Maryland, on Wednesday, October 26th, 2022 at the age of 86. Jackie was a life-long visual artist, arts activist, and social progressive, who believed in the universality of equity in opportunity, access, and respect. Her art has been exhibited nationally and in many private collections.

She was predeceased by siblings, Norman Ristin of Philadelphia and Linda Ristin Lee of Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as her husband and bookend, Tom V. Schmitt, also an established visual artist.

She is survived by her sons, Ian Lipsky and Eric Lipsky, both of Pittsburgh; and grandchildren, Simon, Noa, and Sasha. Her former husband, Lester Lipsky, is professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut.

Services are private. Please omit flowers. Contributions in her memory may be sent to the National Historic Site of Wounded Knee, Inc. 3927 Clover Street, Rapid City, SD 57702, in honor and respect for the many thousands of Lakota people who were forcibly displaced from their traditional lands to make room for new European homesteaders, among whom were Jackie’s own grandparents, father, uncles, and aunt. Jackie played an active role of support to the families of Lakota tribes people who were tried for their demands to reopen treaty negotiations in 1973.
