Obituary for Joyce Barbara Chiani

Joyce Barbara Chiani (age 79) passed away September 11, 2022 surrounded by family, after putting up a brave and admirable fight for several months and truly living up to her childhood nickname "The ox" as in, stubborn as. Joyce was born on November 17, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland to Sylvia and Louis Sober, who passed in 2003 and 1975 respectively. She became the older sister to Marlene Sober, whom she both loved and loved to bicker with until the very end. In 1963, Joyce married Ali Chiani after meeting him on her twenty-first birthday when he waited on her table. She would later describe this encounter to her grandchildren as "love at first sight!" The two remained happily married despite their tiffs over cookies and dust busters, and would have celebrated 60 years together this year. Joyce and Ali had two children; Sean Chiani, who passed in 1993 and with whom her family takes comfort in knowing she is finally reunited, and Ariana Welling (Chris) whom Joyce always described as her "wild child" when recounting the numerous experiences, they found themselves in during her childhood and teenage years. Despite her "wild" years, Ariana atoned for those sins by making Joyce a bubby of six kids; Sasha Mendoza (Julio), Blake Welling (Josue), Collin Welling, Tanner Welling, Hali Welling, and Baylee Welling, all of whom she loved and enjoyed sharing movie nights, dinners, and her Hanukah traditions with. The title she held in highest regard is also the one she earned most recently; Great-Bubby. Her great-grandchildren, Graycen (her boychik), Suri, Junior, Spencer and Selena, were truly the lights of her life; to meet her once was to hear about and be shown pictures of all of them. Joyce was also a friend to many, a sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and more. In addition to all of these traditional titles, Joyce was also: an unofficial restaurant critic, a QVC fanatic, a player of mahjong, a lover and collector of all things elephant, a singer in the comfort of her home or car, a homecook who once made the local paper, a woman with a wheezy and contagious laugh, a watcher of "soaps," and above all else, a beautiful, funny, brave and widely loved woman who will be missed by so many.

Funeral service in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, September 13th at 4pm. Interment at Baltimore Hebrew Cemetery - 318 Berrymans Lane, Reisterstown, MD 21136 on Wednesday, September 14th at 2pm.
