Obituary

Marilyn "Marna" Weil Walter, of Baltimore, MD, passed away on Wednesday, February 17th, 2021 at the age of 87. She is survived by her children, Harold M. "Hal" (Ann) Walter and Perrie F. Walter; grandchildren, Elon I. (Heather) Walter, Joseph A. Wilner, Bari Rosenstein, Max Rosenstein, Benjamin W. (Inna) Walter, and Brooks H. (Ashley) Walter; and great-grandchildren, Jake L. Walter, Ethan M. Walter, Sam J. Walter, Madelyn Walter, Brayden Walter, and Tessa Walter. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Paul Walter; sister, Barbara (Irving) Carton; and parents, Walter Bernard and Beatrice A. Kleiner.

Marna’s joys in life were all centered around doing kind things for others. She loved her family and hosted large weekly dinners and holiday meals, making everyone their favorite dishes. After giving up work as a medical technologist, she volunteered to make life better for others. She was a co-founder of US Against MS, a non-profit that provides a day program for Baltimore adults dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. In addition to being on the board and a sponsor, she attended the day program each week and provided hands-on assistance to enable everyone there to participate to the fullest. Among her other volunteer activities, for decades she was a docent at the Jewish Museum of Maryland and was a president of the B’nai Jacob Shaarei Zion Sisterhood. She always made everyone around her, particularly her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, feel supported and loved. She taught by example and her good works will live on in those she touched.

Services are private. Please omit flowers. Contributions in her memory may be sent to the Paul & Marilyn Walter Education Fund of the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Baltimore, 5750 Park Heights Ave., Baltimore, MD 21215.

I first met Marna many years ago as a new member of the United Support Against Multiple Sclerosis board . Over the many years I got to know her quite well and appreciated her friendship. While I admired her commitment to the USAMS mission and the work she did over many decades I most enjoyed her smile and sense of humor. She was a wonderful women and I am glad I came to know her. It was my privilege to work with Marna at United Support Against Multiple Sclerosis for 34 years. She was a beloved founder, along with a small group of other dedicated volunteers, in 1986. She worked tirelessly in many capacities at USAMS, but most notably, in the establishment of The Kenneth P. Johnson Day Program where she volunteered every week until her retirement just a year and a half ago. I will never forget her welcome and encouragement to a young, inexperienced corresponding secretary. My deepest condolences to Hal and Perrie and all of her beautiful family on the loss of Marna, a long life, well lived and well loved.

Marna and her sister Barbara spent innumerable volunteer hours assisting our clients at our Day Programs, which they and their spouses helped establish. While the programs continues today, it will never be the same without the two sisters' personal touch. Marna always had a smile on her face. What a sweet, sweet lady! All of us at USAMS have lost a very special person. Condolences to her family.

My Aunt Marna was always there when my Mom and Steve needed her. I will long remember the two of them working out financial transactions that might have baffled a Wharton MBA, Passover Seders, and especially the horseradish incident.
I'm sorry Hal and Perrie that circumstances prevent me from being more accessible to support you and your families in your time of loss and grief but know that I hold you in my thoughts.
Marna was deeply loved and will be equally deeply missed.

I organized the program at Tydings & Rosenberg that involved serving dinner at the Ronald McDonald House once a month. Every month Paul would bring in the most wonderful desserts for us to take to the House. People at the House looked forward to the nights Tydings provided dinner because they knew the desserts would be fabulous.
