Obituary for Martin J. Baron

Martin Jay Baron, of Riverdale, New York, passed away on Monday, June 20th, 2022 at the age of 85. He is survived by his loving sister, Ellen Baron Blaustein (Mordecai P Blaustein, MD); niece, Laura (Sidney) Cahn; nephew, Marc (Jessica) Blaustein; great-nieces, Anna Blaustein and Madeleine Cahn; and great-nephew, Benjamin Blaustein. Martin was predeceased by his parents, Henrietta and Arthur Baron; and sister, Ruth Poger.

Martin was a devoted son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle and loyal friend. He was a gentle soul with a kind heart, and was generous to all. A gifted scholar and teacher, Martin mentored generations of fact checkers and worked editing magic for writers. He received a BA in history from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and then earned a Masters Degree in English Constitutional History from Columbia University. Not long after that, Martin began his long, storied career at The New Yorker Magazine, where he rose to be head of the magazine’s renowned fact checking department. It was in that capacity that he was portrayed in the film “Bright Lights, Big City.” He will be dearly missed.

Services at Arlington Chizuk Amuno Cemetery, 4450 N. Rogers Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215, on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022 at 11:00 am. Please omit flowers. The family will be in mourning at 8741 Marburg Manor Drive, Lutherville, Maryland 21093, receiving Wednesday with minyan at 6:30pm. Shiva will continue on Thursday at 5:00pm, with minyan at 6:30pm.
