Pauline Zimmerman Chapin passed away at the age of 95. She is survived by her children Ronni and Eric Udoff of San Diego, California, David and Rita Chapin of Austin, Texas, and Julie and Jeffrey Janofsky of Pikesville, Maryland; and by grandchildren Brian Udoff, Jonathan Udoff (Max Kamer), Hershel Chapin (Lama), Jennifer Chapin (Chris Curry), Jill Janofsky, and Robin Janofsky (Jonathan Robinson); as well as by five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Dr. N. Jerome Chapin, by her youngest daughter Margie Chapin, and by all of her siblings (Betty Weinreb, Rose Zimmerman, Sidney Zimmerman, Shirley Goldstein and Annette Singer).
A lifelong resident of the Baltimore area, Pauline was the youngest of six children of Morris Zimmerman, a downtown luggage store owner, and Dena Singer Zimmerman. Pauline’s parents were immigrants from a small Ukrainian town, part of a large extended family group who settled in Baltimore. Pauline was born at home in a rowhouse on East Pratt Street, but the family later moved to the Lower Park Heights neighborhood, where she grew up. Pauline graduated from Western High and received her Bachelor’s degree from Goucher College in 1948. She taught for many years in the Baltimore-area public schools, starting her career at PS 49 Junior High, then taking a hiatus from teaching in the 1950’s and 60’s to raise her four children. She returned to Goucher to obtain her Master’s degree in 1972, and resumed her teaching career, working at Pot Spring Elementary School and later Glyndon Elementary School. She also managed her husband’s dental practice for several years. In her free time, she liked to bake, collect antiques, knit, travel, read library books, listen to classical music and play computer solitaire. Her holiday meals were legendary.
