Obituary for Dr. Philip Mordechai Macarthy

Dr. Philip Mordechai Macarthy was born on August 29, 1952, in Lagos, Nigeria to Dr. Isaac and Paulina Macarthy. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States to pursue his educational dreams. Dr. Macarthy began his studies at St. Louis University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. He moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana to pursue a Master of Science degree in Microbiology. His thesis while at McNeese State University was based on research he did on mosquito larvae. His findings were so important to the city that he was made an Honorary Citizen of the City of Lake Charles. In pursuit of his Ph.D./MD, he enrolled in Howard University. Dr. Macarthy also earned his Juris Doctorate from American University.

While at McNeese State University he met the love of his life, Beverly. She was an introvert who walked right by this tall, handsome young man in a leather coat and didn’t say a word. She was scared of him. Being the extrovert and charming person that he was, he followed her to the Microbiology Department, said hi and started a conversation. This was the start of 47 beautiful years together. Of course, it wasn’t kisses and roses all the time, and as with most unions, there were challenges. However, they were determined to make it work. They learned to forgive, understand, make concessions, and never be afraid to say I’m sorry. Through it all, they loved each other very much.

Dr. Macarthy was a dedicated, loving husband and father who was devoted to his family. Going to school and working 2-3 jobs to provide for his family was very typical of him. He was always there to offer spirited words of encouragement, uplifting stories, and support for those around him. He exemplified compassion, kindness, and love. At the time of his passing, Dr. Macarthy was the owner of Neurological Disorder Solutions, LLC and Oracle Consulting Group. In addition, he was Executive Vice President at Prodrome Sciences in California. He specialized in Clinical Studies, Pathology, Medical Law, Neuroscience, Molecular Diagnostic and Regulatory Affairs. He made an impact on so many people around the world.

Philip passed away on Monday, May 8th, 2023, at the age of 70. He is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly Macarthy (nee Murphy); children, Dr. Troye Nailah Brock, Angela (Robert) Bryce, Robert Olakunmi (Rebecca) Macarthy, and Christina (Vernon) Ward; siblings, Paul Macarthy, Peter Macarthy, Barbara Macarthy, Grace Akinfewa, Kenneth Macarthy, and James Alaba Macarthy; grandchildren, Zuri Brock, Zoe Brock, Elijah Brock, Antonio White, II, Arielle White, Zane Bryce, Robert Bryce, III, Andre Macarthy, Camryn Hines, Jordan Macarthy, Remi Jones, Grant Ward, and Gabriel Ward; and great grandchild Malachi Macarthy.
